Chorale Intrada for Woodwinds, Saxophones, and Brass
(Organ ad lib.)

- Composer: Michael Altenburg
- Arranger: Dr. Klaus Winkler

The six-part intrada “Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland” is taken from the collection *Cantiones de Adventu... Erfurt 1620*.
The composition is structured in three parts (A, B, C). In the fifth part, the cantus firmus is written in extended note values. In this arrangement, a chorale movement has been inserted twice between the individual parts, though it may be omitted.
The following performance options are possible:
1. The chorale intrada can be performed on its own by soloists or a choir; in this case, the chorale sections are omitted.
2. The chorale sections can be inserted. To create a contrast in sound with the powerful six-part movement, the chorale sections can be performed by soloists.
3. It is particularly appealing sonically to have the chorale movements performed on the organ.
In any case, during a choral performance, the repetitions should be sonically differentiated through register changes. The chorale melody should serve as a guide for the tempo. Ideally, the meter remains the same in both the intrada and the chorale. Individual parts in different transpositions and keys allow for a performance with woodwinds, saxophones, and brass instruments.

Instrumentation:
1st part in C (alto)
(Flute only in choral arrangements)
