This Concert Band instrumentation is taken from one of
Johann Sebastian Bach’s best-known church cantatas:
“Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme -
Zion hört die Wächter singen.”
In this chorale in particular, Bach has created a memorable
counterpoint.
It was clear to the arrangers that, of the many works
Bach composed, only a few are suitable for a Concert Band
performance. That is why they chose this
chorale with its beautiful melodic theme and the
harmonic diversity unique to this composer.
